Impressions of the Chicago Dancing Festival

August 29, 2011

As I announced last month, Viola and I were asked to partner with the 2011 Chicago Dancing Festival.  I knew I would be exposed to an art form I know so little about, but I didn’t expect to learn as much as I did. Before getting into the details of the festival, I wanted to set [...]

Official Partners of the 2011 Chicago Dance Festival

July 14, 2011

It’s hard to imagine dance without music, unless you prefer mimed movements. Music helps give arm gestures, turns, kicks and jumps greater meaning and definition. The history of dance goes hand and hand with music. Even in the most indigenous and primal forms of dance are combined with rhythm pounding of drums. In many respects, [...]

Urban Music Ed Programs Travel the Winding Road to the Concert Hall

June 6, 2011

I recently came across two separate articles profiling urban music education programs in Chicago and New York. The Seattle Times’ Martha Irvine wrote about a Chicago inner-city school striving to raise money to save its orchestra, while NPR’s Jeff Lunden reported on a young music conservatory graduate preparing his Brooklyn elementary school violin students for [...]

Concert Review: Venezuelan Pianist Gabriela Montero at the Harris Theater

February 6, 2011

Thanks to the Harris Theatre for providing us with tickets. Like many people in the US, the first time I heard of Gabriela Montero was during President Obama’s inauguration in 2009. Her recent success is due in large part to her mimed ensemble performance with cellist Yo-Yo Ma, clarinetist Anthony McGill and violinist Itzhak Perlman. Prior [...]

This review was co-written with Viola. Concert Review – Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project

August 22, 2010

For the past two mornings, I have woken up thinking about the concert I attended on Friday of the Silk Road Project, an ensemble organized by Yo-Yo Ma.  It was the first time I was able to attend a Silk Road Project concert and if I can help it, I won’t miss future concerts when [...]

Open Call Audition in Chicago for Arena Rock Musical ROCK OF AGES

May 14, 2010

I was watching the WGN Channel 9 news this morning, when I heard about an open audition for ROCK OF AGES. The show sounds like an 80s rocker’s dream: In 1987 on the Sunset strip, a small-town girl met a big city rocker and in LA’s most famous rock club, they fell in love to [...]
