The all-female Orion Ensemble (Kathryne Pirtle, clarinet; Florentina Ramniceanu, violin; Diana Schmück, piano; Judy Stone, cello; and Jennifer Marlas, viola)will celebrate Women’s History Month with their “A Voice from Heaven” program featuring guest soprano Patrice Michaels. The concerts will feature Michaels singing three arias from her CD Divas of Mozart’s Time including selections by Mozart, Vincenzo Righini, and Vincente Martin y Soler. The works have been specially arranged for Michaels and the Orion by Peter LaBella. Orion will present the program on March 10 at the Fox Valley Presbyterian Church in Geneva, March 13 at the PianoForte Salon in the Fine Arts Building in Chicago, and at the Music Institute of Chicago’s Nichols Concert Hall in Evanston.
In addition, Orion clarinetist Kathryne Pirtle will collaborate with Michaels for Schubert’s Der Hirt auf Dem Felsen (The Shepherd on the Rock) and three Vocalises by Ralph Vaughan Williams. The concert will also include two works by Shostakovich – “Music”, from Seven Romances of Verses by Alexander Blok, Op. 17, No. 7 for cello and piano; and the Piano Trio in E Minor Op. 67.
“A Voice from Heaven” is the third concert series of the Orion Ensemble’s 20th anniversary season. Performances will take place Sunday, March 10 at 7 p.m. at Fox Valley Presbyterian Church, 227 East Side Drive in Geneva; Wednesday, March 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the PianoForte Salon in the Fine Arts Building, 410 S. Michigan Avenue in Chicago; and Sunday, March 17 at 3 p.m. at Music Institute of Chicago’s Nichols Concert Hall, 1490 Chicago Avenue in Evanston. Single tickets are $26, $23 for seniors and $10 for students; admission is free for children 12 and younger. A four-ticket flexible subscription provides a 10 percent savings on full-priced tickets.
