Teens Can Fight for Music Education in Third Annual Battle for the Bands Campaign

Contrapuntist and I both believe strongly in the importance of music education. I’m a Suzuki violin teacher, and subscribe wholeheartedly to the idea that music is the best way to create a global community. Contrapuntist is a real-life example of how music can save someone’s life (read more about Contrapuntist’s story here). That’s why we were excited to receive news about DoSomething.org and the VH1 Save the Music Foundation‘s third annual “Battle for the Bands” campaign aimed at mobilizing teams to advocate for music education. The program will run from March 1 through April 26, 2012. Pop artist Kelly Clarkson filmed a PSA for the campaign, which premiered on Idolator.com.

Teens can join the “Battle for the Bands” campaign by submitting music videos about the importance of music education or rewriting the lyrics of their favorite song. DoSomething.org and VH1 will create a mashup of the best videos and present it to representatives on Capitol Hill.

A panel of expert and celebrity judges will evaluate submissions based on creativity, strength of argument, use of social media, and overall participation. The Grand Prize video will receive up to $5000 in grant funding for their school music program. Other prizes include a VH1 produced Pop Up Video to air on VH1.com, concert tickets, and acoustic guitar, and up to $10,000 in scholarships.

The program encourages students to become arts advocates in their communities. According to Paul Cothran, executive director of the VH1 save the music foundation:

Through our partnership with DoSomething.org, the “Battle for the Bands” campaign gives a voice to the individuals that music education affects directly. It is always thrilling to see the talent submitted each year and watch young people rally around such an important cause. With their help we will work towards ensuring that no child be deprived of access to a complete education that includes music.

Kelly Clarkson’s PSA launched during the live telecast of VH1’s Pepsi Fan Jam concert in February and will air on Channel One News, VH1, and Palladia. You can check out the video below. And for more information, please visit www.dosomething.org/battle
