DSharp’s Violin Stylings Fuse Pop, Rock, and Hip-Hop into One Unique Flavor

While Contrapuntist and I were being bums at home on a lazy summer night, I decided to peruse my Google reader for any rock violin news. I came across a CBS news video featuring pop violinist Derryk Gleaton‘s (a.k.a. DSharptheViolinist) cover of Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night (TGIF)”. Even though I don’t like most of the pop/hip-hop violinists that I’ve run across, and I hate Katy Perry, I figured I’d check it out. To my surprise, I enjoyed DSharp’s remix. He has impressive technical chops and a great sense of style.

According to DSharp’s website, he began playing violin and viola in school at the age of 11. He built upon his classical background and began to fuse other styles such as pop, rock, soul, electro, and hip-hop. He’s performed in all types of venues ranging from on stage in front of thousands to art exhibits.

Below you’ll find two videos – “Last Friday Night (TGIF)” and LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem”. For more on DSharp, you can follow him on Twitter.
