One of Ronnie James Dio’s final live performances, Neon Lights, is now available released on CD and DVD. With members of Black Sabbath, Heaven and Hell gave a historic performance at the Wacken Open Air Festival on July 30, 2009.
On this hot summer night, vocalist Ronnie James Dio, guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler, and drummer Vinny Appice commanded the stage, transcending the mere concept of a heavy metal concert. The strength and veracity of Dio’s delivery, which has inspired three generations of metal vocalists, wrapped itself around each and every audience member. Butler’s declarative bass lines, Iommi’s legendary riffing, and Appice’s unrelenting fills provide the forceful heartbeat behind anthems “Mob Rules,” “Die Young,” “Neon Knights ,” and namesake tune “Heaven and Hell.”
The DVD includes 30th anniversary interviews with all four band members as a bonus feature. Personal one-on-one’s are conducted with Ronnie, Tony, Geezer, and Vinny as they reflect on the making of their Heaven And Hell album. Additionally, the Neon Nights DVD has newly recorded personal tributes from Iommi, Appce, and Butler in memory of Dio.
Heaven & Hell’s journey began in 2006, when Rhino asked the quartet to record a few new songs for The Dio Years, a collection spotlighting the Mob Rules lineup of Black Sabbath – Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Vinny Appice.
The impromptu get-together quickly proved the creative spark was still burning 14 years after the band’s last album. This led the band to tour and produce The Devil You Know, which was released in the spring of 2009.
Unfortunately, it was in the fall of 2009 that Dio was diagnosed with stomach cancer. Ronnie James Dio died earlier this year after losing his battle with stomach cancer.
