I woke up this morning, turned on my computer and sipped my morning cup of java to quickly be surprised by a conversation taking place between some metal tweeps, in particular MetalasFuck. Finland has a heavy metal band for kids, which arguably makes the country THE heavy metal country.
While kids in the US digest boring shows like Barney and the Teletubbies, kids in Finland are jamming out to the music of Hevisaurus. The idea was born when Mirka Rantanen, a veteran metalhead, took his own kids to a children’s concert. Afterwards, he asked a simple question: “What if I started making music for kids? What if it was heavy metal, since that’s what I’ve been doing for 25 years?”
What many would consider a wild and crazy idea here in the US has turned into a hit success in Finland. And what’s cool to virtually every kid? Dinosaurs. In this case, Dinosaurs dressed in leather. Add metal to the mix and you get Hevisaurus.
Now, I don’t have any children, but if I did you can bank I’d be all over of this. I always hear you need to start exposing children to things at a young age. I can’t speak a word of Finnish which means my kids would instantly be exposed to a new language in a very cool way and something we could do as a family. I am so blown away by this, I think the metal community needs to do something like this here. Forget all the wussified junk kids digest, let’s educate them the metal way.
