Anvil! The Story of Anvil is a documentary about Canadian metal band Anvil‘s last-ditch quest for elusive fame and fortune. The band was founded in 1977 by then 14-year-old Toronto school friends Steve “Lips” Kudlow and Robb Reiner, who made a pact to rock together forever. The band became the “demagogues of Canadian metal” with the release of their 1982 album Metal On Metal, which influenced bands including Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax. Unfortunately, since then, Anvil has disappeared into obscurity. Director Sacha Gervasi, who worked as a roadie for the band back in the 80s, documents the band’s struggle to make ends meet, follows them on a European tour, and introduces the viewer to the band members’ families.
I first heard about this movie back in April on NPR. I never saw the movie in the theater, so I’m very excited to get the chance to finally see it. The movie has gotten some great reviews from publications such as Rolling Stone, USA Today, and the New Yorker. Apparently, it’s a movie that even non-metal fans will enjoy. Here’s the trailer, and if you get a chance to see the movie, I’d love to hear what you think. You can either get the movie on DVD on October 6, or you can watch it on VH1 Classic at 10:00 PM EST on October 3.
