If you haven’t heard of Rodrigo y Gabriela, they are a guitar duo with a unique sound blending their Latino heritage together with their appreciation for heavy metal. What I find compelling about RyG, short for Rodrigo y Gabriela, is how they have managed to merge there different musical passions into a unique combination. True artists always find a way to push the musical envelope. RyG have pushed the musical envelope by arranging well known works, like Metallica’s Orion and Led Zepplin‘s Stairway to Heaven, but adding their unique musical stamp by only performing it on two acoustic guitars adding qualities of the Spanish guitar. When I heard the arrangement of Orion, at first, I wasn’t sure how successful this would turn out. As I continued to listen to the arrangement, what impressed me the most was the fact RyG wasn’t trying to imitate Metallica, which many artists do, but instead play homage to them.
The other more traditional Latin-American/pseudo-flamenco sounding compositions are filled with energy that are simply delightful to listen too. It’s almost impossible to not get into their groove. Although I haven’t seen them perform yet, based on what reviewers have to say, it sounds as if they put on quite a performance. I just might make a trip to Summerfest Festival, Milwaukee, USA for their July 5th performance.
In case you haven’t heard them yet, here is a live performance of Rodrigo y Gabriela performing Stairway to Heaven. Enjoy!
